The Greater Manchester town and civil parish of Mossley lies in the foothills of the Pennines and the Upper Tame Valley.
Part of Tameside, it is famous for its excellent walking and hiking trails. Waterside lovers can enjoy the Huddersfield Canal and the River Medlock, while Dovestone Reservoir at Saddleworth Moor is also within easy reach.
The name comes from the words ‘moss’ meaning a boggy area, and ‘lea’, which is a clearing in a wood. It was once a small hamlet and a scattered farming community.
Henry de Mossley claimed the land in 1309, and there is a spot in Mossley where you can straddle Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire.
The town itself is compact but offers an abundance of highly-rated schools, traditional country pubs, small shops, and eateries. For example, the Rising Sun offers delicious stone-baked pizza, real ale and stunning views over the valley, while the recently refurbished Dysarts Arms was recently voted the best pub in Tameside.
A mere 20-minute commute to Manchester and Huddersfield by rail, Mossley also has the Bee Network bus services to Aston and Saddleworth.Â
Historians will want to visit Buckton Castle, once thought to be an Iron Age fort, until archaeologists from Manchester University discovered stone walls and 12th-century pottery there.
We don’t just cover Mossley.
We are a local company with a wide reach. Our customer base stretches across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and beyond.
This list is updated regularly, so don’t worry if you can’t see your precise location here. We cover most of the North West, and it never hurts to ask!
