About the Area

A spa town situated in the Borough of High Peak, Derbyshire, Buxton is the home of Buxton Water.

Surrounded on three sides by the Peak District, it is the ideal base for exploring the region via hiking and cycling trails.

Known as ‘Aquae Arnemetiae’ by the Romans, Buxton is home to natural wonders, including Poole’s Cavern and St Ann’s Well.

The stunning architecture includes the historic Old Hall Hotel, which dates back to 1573 and counts the captive Mary Queen of Scots among its ‘guests’. Other unique tourist attractions are the recently restored Georgian Crescent, built in the 1780s, and the ‘Theatre in the Hills’ Buxton Opera House, designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1903.

Famous sons and daughters of Buxton include the 5th Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish, whose developments in the 1780s put the town on the map. Poet and novelist Vera Brittain spent almost 50 years living and working in Buxton and has a blue plaque on the second house she lived in. The Disney director of Mary Poppins and Bed Knobs And Broomsticks, Robert Stevenson, was born in Buxton in 1905, and the late radio DJ Dave Lee Travis was born in the town in 1945.
