About the Area

Historically part of Lancashire, Audenshaw is a town in Tameside, a suburb of Greater Manchester, known for its reservoirs and the Ashton Canal.

The name derives from the old English for “Woodland”, and legend says Audenshaw was the site of a blood-soaked battle between the Saxons and the Danes as part of the Viking invasion in 869-870.

There is excellent fishing available and a wealth of historical buildings and structures, including the boatyard, China Bridge, Ryecroft Hall, and Ye OId Blue Pig, a pub hidden in a cul-de-sac, which is 300 years old. There is also a warm memorial at the entrance to Audenshaw Cemetery, which is a Grade II-listed building.

The Guide Bridge Theater has a busy programme of plays, pantomimes and other local events. You will also find plenty of cycling and walking paths, plus highly-rated eateries in the area.

Famous people from Audenshaw include Simply Red lead singer Mick Hucknall, Coronation Street actress Brooke Vincent, Manchester City footballer Ellis Plummer, and Dan Dare cartoon creator Frank Hampson.
