About the Area
Sitting on the River Douglas and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Wigan is a town and metropolitan borough in North West Greater Manchester.
Thought to have once been a Roman garrison called Coccium, Wigan is one of the four oldest boroughs in Lancashire and received a charter from Henry VIII in 1246.
Once a hub of coal and cotton production, Wigan moved with the times and is now the home of the North West Tourist Board and the Tidy Britain Group.
History buffs can visit some of the 125 listed buildings including monuments such as Mab’s Cross and The Boer War Memorial in Mesnes Park.
Wigan Pier became famous through George Orwell’s 1937 novel The Road to Wigan Pier but the town boasts many other claims to fame.
Companies that started life in Wigan include Beechams, Marks & Spencer, Patak’s Indian Foods and Heinz Baked Beans.
The town also boasts such diverse musical exports as George Formby and The Verve.
