About the Area
Once one of Britain’s wealthiest towns, Rochdale boasts a rich history dating back to mention in the Doomsday Book in 1086.
Originally christened ‘Recedam Manor’, the large town evolved to ‘Rachedale’ and eventually Rochdale. It remains one of the biggest and most significant towns in the UK.
Overlooked by the ‘Seven Sisters’ tower blocks, Rochdale is home to a stunning ‘neo-gothic’ 17th-century town hall, which has undergone extensive renovation in recent years.
There are also several museums, including Rochdale Pioneers Museum and Touchstones Rochdale museum, art gallery and cafe, plus purple and blue plaque walking trails commemorating the town’s long history.
Other attractions include the River Roch which runs through the city centre, Healey Dell Nature Reserve and Tea Rooms and 10 green flag parks, including Queen’s Park, Truffet Park and Rochdale Memorial Gardens.
Rochdale’s famous sons and daughters include actress Anna Friel, singer Lisa Stansfield, and writer and TV personality Bill Oddie.
