About the Area
Five miles east of Manchester City Centre, Denton is a town in Tameside. The name likely comes from ‘Dane-town’, meaning valley town in Anglo-Saxon. Historically part of Lancashire, Denton was a hub for felt hatting as early as 1702, with 24,000 felt hats being produced in Denton in just a week by 1840. There were also several coal mines in the area, until 1929 when Denton Colliery Co. went into voluntary liquidation following strikes and flooding. Aspects of the Denton Colliery, such as the colliery offices (now a stonemason showroom) can still be seen in the town.
Other attractions include St. Lawrence’s church, known locally as ‘the old peg’ or the black and white church, which dates back almost 500 years. The graveyard contains a gravestone marked with a skull and crossbones.
Famous people from Denton include Simply Red lead singer Mick Hucknall, soap stars Brooke Vincent, and Tony Audenshaw, actress Samantha Siddall, stand-up comedian and TV presenter Stephen Bailey, IMDb CEO & entrepreneur Col Needham, and footballers the late Jimmy Armfield (a member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning squad), Steve Massey, and James Tunnicliffe.
