About the Area
Voted one of Britain’s friendliest towns, Bolton is a metropolitan county of Greater Manchester. With a population of over 261,000, Bolton is one of the biggest UK towns that isn’t a city.
Once a cotton and wool hub, Bolton’s rich heritage is evident in its canals and railways, but it is far from the stereotypes of cobbled streets and flat caps. From award-winning Indian food to international sports events, modern Bolton is a town on the rise.

Although he was born in Burnley, actor Sir Ian McKellen went to Bolton school and is an adopted Boltonian. Bolton is the birthplace of comedians Peter Kay and Dave Spikey, Radio DJs Sara Cox and Mark Radcliffe, and model/presenter and radio DJ Vernon Kay.
