About the Area
Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town in Tameside, set in the foothills of the Pennines but just 6 miles east of Manchester. The name Ashton is believed to derive from the Anglo-Saxon for “settlement by ash trees”. Evidence of life in the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Viking period has been discovered in the town. Like nearby Manchester and Denton, Ashton was once a cotton mill town and had the world’s deepest mine shaft in 1882, at 870 metres.
Popular attractions and activities include Ashton Market, Hartshead Pike Tower, narrow boating on Portland Basin, Ashton Memorial Gardens, Wendy’s Memory Lane & Tearoom, Park Bride Industrial Hamlet, Cockfields Farm Park and the Museum of the Manchester Regiment.
Ashton has produced several soap stars and actors, including Amanda Barrie, Roy Barraclough, Dawn Acton, William Tarmey and Sean Wilson, who all found fame on Coronation Street, Brian Wilde, Tony Gardner and Philip Lowrie. Labour Party member Angela Rayner, Olympic gymnast Rebecca Tunney, 1966 World Cup hattrick-hero Sir Geoff Hurst, and model and TV presenter Melanie Sykes also hail from the area.
