About The Area

The lively town of New Mills is set high in Derbyshire, in the North West of the Peak District.

Originally founded as a cotton mill, known as Berde Mill, next to the existing Salem Mill (hence the name), New Mills can be traced back as early as 1391. You can see evidence of the first five mills to operate in the area at the New Mills Heritage Centre.

You can visit The Torrs Riverside Park, known locally as the park ‘under the town’ for beautiful scenic walks, picnics and information about the area’s natural and industrial history.

Though it is small, it has a lot of character, with a majestic sandstone gorge called The Torrs at its heart and twin church spires resembling needles rising to disrupt the skyline. Among the viaducts of the two rivers – River Sett and River Goyt, you will also find several independent shops and eateries, a vibrant art scene and a busy programme of events.

New Mills has a few claims to fame. The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit is thought to have been set on the railway line between Marple and New Mills, and Strines Station. This belief is commemorated by the Edith Nesbit Literary Trail, one of several tourist attractions.

Another is the sweet-smelling Swizzels-Matlow factory, home of such treats as Love Hearts, Parma Violets, Drumstick lollies and Refreshers. The factory has stood proudly close to the pretty Peak Forest Canal since the company was founded in 1928.
