About the Area

The Wirral is the name given to The Wirral Peninsula. Roughly rectangular, the peninsula is approximately 15 miles long, with Liverpool Bay to the north, the Mersey Estuary to the east, and the Dee Estuary to the west.

Wirral means myrtle corner in Old English, with ‘wir’ referring to a myrtle tree and ‘heal’, an angle or slope.

Once wholly located in Cheshire, the Wirral now has its southern third in Cheshire, with most of the rest in Merseyside.

There is evidence of human habitation since around 12,000 BC and retains plenty of interesting architecture, including Rock Park, Hamilton Square and Port Sunlight.

A mix of picturesque villages, urban areas, and sandy beaches, the Wirral boasts areas owned by the National Trust, including Country Park and the Victorian Pleasure Gardens, Thor’s Stone, and North Wirral Coastal Park.

Other attractions include Leasowe Lighthouse, the Lady Lever Art Gallery, the multi-award-winning Ness Botanical Gardens, and The visitor centre at RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands.

The Wirral appears several times in literature, including Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Awaydays by Kevin Samson. Wirral locations were used in films and TV shows, including Chariots of Fire (1981), Tolkien (2017), Peaky Blinders (2013-2022) and Safe House (2017).
