About the Area
A historic market town in Cheshire, Cheadle is 9 miles south of Manchester city centre.
The town dates back to the 13th Century and was mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Celle”. Initially, just a settlement of nine families spanning six miles, “Chedle” via Ralph Basset, was granted a market charter and annual fair by King Henry VIII in 1250.
Today, its blend of vibrant local events and historic attractions makes it a bustling tourist destination all year round.
First on any budding novelist’s ‘to see’ list is Abney Hall, a Victorian mansion where crime novel queen Agatha Christie used to live. History buffs will love the 16th-century Cheadle Old Hall. A grade II listed building that was once home to the renowned Cheadle family, it is now a venue for local events and a community centre. The busy calendar of events includes the Cheadle Carnival and the Cheadle Food and Drink Festival.
Cheadle doesn’t lack green spaces either. Abney Park Hall and Bruntwood Park are just two of the naturally beautiful areas offering walking trails, cycle paths and perfect places to picnic.
Famous sons and daughters of Cheadle include triple threat Diana Darvey, best known for The Benny Hill Show, and comedian Jason Manford.
