How to Clean Sash Windows: 5 Simple Steps

Cleaning sash windows may seem daunting, but it is easier than you think. All you need are a few cleaning items and some tips from the experts to have your sash windows gleaming in no time.

When to clean your sash windows

The simple answer to when to clean sash windows is when they look dirty. However, avoid cleaning your external windows when it is hot and sunny, as the glass will dry quickly and may dry streaky.

Safety precautions when cleaning windows

It is possible to clean your top windows yourself. Never stand on a stool or chair because you could fall and hurt yourself. Ensure any ladder you are using is strong and steady.

Have someone hold the bottom of the ladder as you climb to ensure it doesn’t tip. You can also try a long-handled squeegee for better reach. If your sash windows are hard to reach or very high, you should consider hiring a professional window cleaner.

Cleaning traditional sliding sash windows in five easy steps

  1. Ensure you are safe & gather your equipment
  2. Clean the outer face of the upper sash first – slide both sashes down, reach over and clean the top part of the outer pane
  3. Lower the top sash and lift the bottom sash halfway, then clean the upper section
  4. Lift both sashes up to clean the lower section of the external glass
  5. Lower the inner sash halfway and clean the lower section
  6. Sit back and admire your work.

What do I use in cleaning sash windows?

You will need the following items:

  • Soft or microfibre cloth
  • Squeege/dry cloth – to wipe clean
  • Glass cleaning spray (for interior glass)
  • Dishwashing liquid and water mix (for exterior glass)

Alternatively, use diluted vinegar and lemon juice as an eco-friendly natural cleaning spray.

The different types of sash windows to clean

Wooden

Timber sash windows typically need more upkeep than uPVC and require more frequent cleaning. First, clean the frame using a brush to remove debris, then clean following our step-by-step guide above. Remove any excess water from the timber frame to prevent rotting or warping.

uPVC

Most of our sliding sash windows are uPVC and require very little maintenance. A soft cloth and warm soapy water will get the job done, and many of our uPVC sash windows tilt for easy cleaning.

Single-hung

If your sash windows are single-hung, only one section of the window will move. This may make cleaning more complicated, but single-hung windows may have hinged sashes or removable clips in the jam that enable you to clean the windows.

Double-hung

Double-hung sash windows can usually be cleaned by following the steps above. The exception is old double sash windows, which may have been painted shut. If this is the case, you will need to clean the exterior glass and frame from the outside or hire a window cleaner.

How to clean sash windows inside?

As described, most sash windows can be cleaned from the inside by manoeuvring the sashes to access the different sections.

How to clean sash windows outside?

If you need to clean your sash windows from the outside, please, prioritise your safety at all times.

How do you clean secondary glazing on sash windows?

Secondary glazing panels often have opening mechanisms enabling you to clean the backs. Clean them how you would any window, with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, around every few months.

How can I improve my old sash windows?

Apart from regular cleaning, you can improve your old sash windows by making any necessary repairs or upgrading to a more modern design. For example, older sash windows may have single glazing which is unsuitable for modern living. You can check out our glazing options, including triple glazing, available with every Manchester Window Factory product.

Should I hire a window cleaner to clean my sash windows?

Whether you hire a professional window cleaner will usually depend on if you would rather have the time it takes to clean the windows than the money it costs to hire someone to perform the task. If you are time-poor, you may feel that saving time is worth the price. Another reason you may prefer to hire a professional is if you have lots of sash windows or they are not easily accessible. Bear in mind that it is likely to cost more if this is the case due to the safety equipment needed. You can also look into self-cleaning glass windows at Manchester Window Factory. In most cases, cleaning your sash windows is a relatively simple task which can make a big difference to the overall look of your home and may even increase the windows’ lifespan.
