About the Area

Named Greater Manchester’s ‘Town of Culture’ in 2022, Stalybridge is a small town in Tameside, 8 miles east of Manchester.

Nestled at the foothills of the Pennines, Stalybridge was once nicknamed ‘Little Venice’ due to the (recently restored) Huddersfield Narrow Canal and River Tam running straight through the town.

Money from the National Lottery and other sources have rejuvenated the town with new bars and clubs seeing a local radio station christen it ‘StalyVegas’.

Attractions include Stalybridge Country Park, The People’s Gallery, St George’s Church, Chadwick Dam, and the Transpennine Real Ale Trail.

Stalybridge is mentioned twice in the Guinness Book of World Records, for boasting both the the longest-named pub in Britain, ‘The Old Thirteenth Cheshire Astley Volunteer Rifleman Corps Inn’, and the shortest-named pub in Britain, ‘The Q Inn’. The town also has the oldest civilian brass band in the world, and was the home of “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” writer Jack Judge.

Other claims to fame include being the primary location for the 1970s film ‘Yanks’ starring Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Gere, hosting artist L.S.Lowry for almost 20 until he died in 1976 and being the birthplace of Beatrix Potter’s mother, Helen Leech.
