About the Area
A town in Tameside, Hyde (Hide) is named after a measure of land required for tax purposes, of around 120 acres. Once just a cluster of houses known as ‘Red Pump Street’, Hyde blossomed into a fully-fledged town due to its cotton production in the Industrial Revolution.
Hyde is not short of nearby beauty spots. Werneth Low Country Park offers panoramic views over Manchester, Ashton and Hyde, while the Eastwood RSPB Reserve with its birds and abundant foliage is perfect for a gentle stroll.
The town is mentioned several times in the BBC drama Life on Mars, while the dance scene from the 1979 film Yanks starring Richard Gere was filmed in Hyde town hall.
Famous sons and daughters of Hyde, include boxer Ricky Hatton, actress Lucy Dixon, the late radio and TV presenter Stuart Hall, and pioneering female mathematician Agnes Bell Collier.
