About the Area

Nestled in northern Greater Manchester, Bury is a vibrant town with a rich history dating back to Roman times. The name Bury comes from the Saxon words for ‘a stronghold’ (Buri/Byri). It is thought the region was once covered by forests and marshes.

The town centre is formed around an ancient marketplace, and the Bury Museum has some bronze coins dated AD 253–282.

Markets have continued to be important to Bury, with fish, livestock and woven goods gradually giving way to more modern fare sold at The New Market Hall.

Bury is also home to the remains of a castle, built in 1469 as a medieval manor house belonging to Sir Thomas Pilkington. Other attractions include Peel Tower, the Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre, The Mill Gate shopping centre and The Rock, a large shopping, entertainment and leisure facility.

Events throughout the year include the world-famous Bury Black Pudding Throwing Championship, Vintage 1940s weekends at The East Lancs Railway, and The Ramsbottom Jigsaw Festival.

Bury’s famous sons and daughters include statesman Sir Robert Peel, BBC Journalist Victoria Derbyshire, Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, the late comedian and actress Victoria Wood, CBE, footballers Gary and Phil Neville and Kieran Trippier, and actress Gemma Atkinson.
