About the Area

Situated between the Peak District & the Cheshire Plain, Macclesfield is a market town and civil parish in Cheshire East.

Just 16 miles south of Manchester, Macclesfield is famous for its reservoirs, rivers, canals, and forests.

The medieval town was a silk-manufacturing hub, earning it the nickname “Silk Town”. Another nickname is “Treacle Town” referring to an incident in Macclesfield’s rich history where a horse-drawn wagon carrying treacle overturned, allowing the poor to scoop up the treacle which flowed into the street.

Today, it is a popular tourist destination, with attractions including the famous Silk Museum Blaze Farm, Capesthorne, Jodrell Bank, Gawsworth Hall, Tegg’s Nose, and Treacle Market. The town hosts several festivals a year, including Macc Pride,  Macclesfield Beer Festival, and Rewind North.

Famous sons and daughters of Macclesfield include former footballer Peter Crouch, Olympic gold medal-winning yachtsman Sir Ben Ainslie, Emmerdale actor Dominic Brunt, Women’s footballer Izzy Christiansen and the late Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division, who is buried in the town’s cemetery.
