Sash windows are a beautiful feature common in period properties. However, traditional sash windows are not without their issues.
If you don’t know when your sash windows were installed, they will likely be due for an upgrade. After all, sash windows may be over 100 years old, depending on the age of your property.
Alternatively, restoring sash windows that have been removed would be an excellent start if you want to restore a period home to its former glory.
Whatever your sliding sash windows plans, we’re here to make the whole process as painless as possible. Here are a few of your frequently asked questions answered.
What is a sash window?
A sash window has a single pane of glass in a frame fixed to the house. Within the frame are two sashes divided into sections which slide to open and close the window.
Most traditional sash windows open by the sashes sliding up and down or, occasionally, side to side. Many of our sash windows can be opened both ways for added versatility.
Heavily associated with Georgian and Victorian buildings, traditional sash windows can also be found in Edwardian properties.
Do sash windows suit modern houses?
Will sash windows look out of place on a modern property?
Well, that depends on which style you choose. Our authentic Accoya timber sash windows are perfect for blending into period design but may look slightly incongruous on a more modern build.
On the other hand, our Classic range has a simple design and clean, modern lines to complement any property.
Do you have a range of colours I can choose from
Absolutely. Not only do we have four different ranges of sliding sash windows available but we also offer a choice of materials and colours.
Make your selection from uPVC, timber or aluminium, then decide on a colour or finish.
From natural wood effects to custom colours, we help you to design the ideal sash windows to suit your taste. For a slick, thoroughly modern look, you can also pick our aluminium sash windows in Anthracite Grey.
Don’t forget the hardware
Sash windows involve some visible hardware, which must complement your choice of windows. We offer sash lifts, locks, tilt knobs, pole eyes and handles in bright white, classic black, opulent gold, contemporary chrome, and Satin chrome, so you’re sure to find something that suits you.
The difference between timber and uPVC Sash Windows
The main difference between timber and uPVC sash windows is the cost, with uPVC being the much cheaper option.
Both score well in reducing heat loss, provided you are upgrading to double or triple glazing.
Wooden sash windows have survived over 100 years in many cases, but it’s important to note that timber windows require more maintenance.
uPVC requires very little maintenance but has a much shorter lifespan than real wood (around ten years).
Although the materials are very different, you can achieve an authentic-looking wood effect on uPVC. That said, if you have your heart set on timber frames, then they are the right choice for you. Just be prepared to put in the work to keep them looking their best.
Are sash windows double or triple-glazed?
All of our sliding sash windows are available in double or triple glazing. We offer triple glazing across all our products, and sash windows are no exception. If you want to know more about the benefits of triple glazing, head over to our blog section for more information.
How insulated are uPVC and timber sash windows?
uPVC and timber sash windows both offer excellent insulation, albeit for slightly different reasons. Timber is a naturally insulating material, while uPVC windows are manufactured with multiple chambers in the frame to reduce heat loss.
The main factors are that your windows are double or triple-glazed and that they are installed properly.
The benefits of sliding sash windows
A standout feature of any property, there are many benefits to having sliding sash windows, including:
- They look fantastic
- They can add value to your home
- They are versatile
- They’re secure and extra safety features can be incorporated
- Depending on the material used, they are fairly low maintenance
The common issues with sash windows
Along with the sliding sash windows benefits mentioned, there are also a couple of issues you should be aware of, including:
- Traditional sliding sash windows are heavy
- Frequently get stuck due to moisture penetrating the frame
- Damp can rot the wood, causing it to warp
- When damp, they are tricky to paint and maintain
- They can be prone to drafts
- Offer poor ventilation
- Condensation can build up on the inside o the windows
- The attached cords can get broken
Thankfully, these issues have generally been solved by modern technology.
At Manchester Window Factory, we are committed to bringing you the best windows available on the UK market. Our sliding sash windows work on a spiral balance system for a smooth gliding action, rather than the cords and pulleys or old. This gives you more room for glass (such as double or triple glazing). Modern frames are lighter and slimline to maximise your view.
They also offer British police standard security and are highly energy efficient. You don’t need to worry about poor ventilation or a build-up of condensation with a sliding sash window from Manchester Window Factory.
Are sliding sash windows difficult to replace?
Replacing sliding sash windows is usually a relatively simple process and one we are happy to provide.
In most cases, you can either replace our sliding sash windows like for like with modern sash windows or swap to casement windows.
If you live in a listed building or a conservation area, you may need planning permission for either option. On occasion, local permissions will dictate which style of window you must have on your property.
But don’t worry. We offer a wide range of traditional and contemporary sash windows, and casement windows, designed to complement your existing architecture and interior decor.
Once you’ve checked the permissions and made your choice, our team of professional fitters will be more than happy to fit your new windows.
