About the Middleton Area

Situated on the River Irk, Middleton is a historic town in the borough of Rochdale.

Once a county parish, Middleton is known as the ‘Golden Cluster’ for its cluster of magnificent heritage buildings, including a Victorian church, a Renaissance school, a medieval ‘hall’ church and one of the first Palladian houses in England.

The town is a magnet for history buffs with other attractions, including a 16th Century pub called Olde Boar’s Head Inn.

Middleton is well equipped with excellent pubs, including Hare and Hounds, The Joiners Arms and Radclyffe Arms.

Although it is now largely suburban, Middleton has retained some stunning green spaces, including the Green Flag-award-winning Jubilee Park, featuring the Exedra by local Arts and Crafts architect Edgar Wood. Redhill quarry and picnic area is another picturesque spot.

You can find out more about Wood at the Edgar Wood Centre, see the striking stained glass windows at Middleton Parish Church or catch a concert or show at Middleton Arena.

Just five miles north of Manchester City Centre, and five miles south of Rochdale, Middleton is easily accessible by bus or train.

Aside from Edgar Wood, the most famous people to come from Middleton are former Manchester United and England footballer and comedian and actor Steve Coogan.

Middleton was also the home of Radical writer Sam Bamford.
