About the Area
A charming small town and village with a rich history, Failsworth is located in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham.
Originally named ‘Falesword’ the town dates back to the 13th Century.
Failwsorth is home to the famous Failsworth Pole, where some version of a maypole has stood since at least 1793, although historians believe earlier maypoles were likely erected there for centuries. The current maypole replaced the 1793 version which was blown down in 1950.
Other historic landmarks include the Failsworth Pole War Memorial.
The town doesn’t lack for natural beauty either, with Daisy Nook Country Park and Failsworth Pole Nature Reserve attracting picnickers, walkers and wildlife enthusiasts throughout the year.
Failsworth Carnival is an annual event that features a parade of colourful floats, live music, dance acts, food and fairground rides.
Famous people from Failsworth include model Agyness Deyn, actors Amy James-Kelly and Malcolm Tierney, novelist Kate Fenton, billionaire chemical engineer and industrialist Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Stone Roses’ Gary Mountfield and Thin Lizzy’s Darren Wharton.
